I have loved my subies, but having driven a few other awd and 4wd vehicles, I prefer some of those alternatives better for everyday driving than the symmetrical awd of subarus. Still, for the money there isn't a more versatile and dependable outdoor-lover's vehicle.

I love the japanese prototype, but you're right --- the production version in the pics at upper-right don't look as sexy. I agree, I loved the Tribeca's front-end --- but I didn't like the back end. If they did the old Tribeca jet fighter front-end, together with the newer back-end, that would be cool.

You like the prototype grill or the actual production version? The prototype looks sweet... very solid front-end and grill with minimal plastic body panels (see the squared-off body panels on production). Sometimes I wonder who is making design decisions because the Japanese prototype image above is awesome, but when the sheetmetal came together for real, it's not quite as cool. Oh well.

Maybe I'll have to look for something else for my next vehicle. I really want something with 7-passenger capability, so the Tribeca or maybe the Mitsubishi Outlander will have to do the trick.

I like that grill, actually --- it looks kind of like an audi. ;-)

Yeah, I have to say that I feel more secure with the quattro than the symmetrical all wheel drive. It seems to shift the torque to the wheels that need it most, which means I rarely feel any slippage. Now, the A6 doesn't have the clearance of the Q or the allroad so I would like to get something like that at some point for the deeper snow or off-road situations.

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed in the production Outback design. It looks kind of Hyundai-esque to me. Take a look at the prototype:

Now that looks great, but the production skin isn't quite as appealing.

You like the way your Audi does in the snow over your Subie? I haven't driven a Quattro in the snow, but I've driven a few other AWD vehicles (Honda Pilot and Dodge Durango). The Honda did quite well, but the Durango does OK. Seems like it all depends on the type of AWD. Not all are created equal, but I've been very satisfied with the performance of every Subaru I've owned (I'm on #5 right now).
