There are 4 ski routes to descend the Grand, 2 of which go to south which he would need to take in order to get back to the saddle to then head up the Middle Teton. My guess is that he was just sitting around wondering what ski objective to do next and figured, "huh, I bet there's enough snow to link the three Teton's" and sent it solo. Since this was his 12 time skiing from the summit of the Grand I’m sure he knew the route well.
