KEEN Introduces Newport Backpack

Posted in Backpacking Gear, Laptop Bags, Outdoor Gear by Jason Mitchell - 07.20.2009

As the name suggests, the all-new KEEN Newport Backpack takes its cues from the ubiquitous KEEN Newport Sandals that have made the brand so famous. One look at the compression straps and you think, “That pack sure looks like KEEN Newport Sandals”. Well, I’ll take a step out on a limb and say, YES… it was planned that way.  :-)

I’ve logged some time with this pack and can honestly say it’s not worth your time/money. The back panel and straps are very comfortable, but that’s about where it ends as this pack isn’t built for everyday hauling.

You’d think with a laptop sleeve, etc., that there would be more compartments to stash power cords, cell phones and other electronic accessories, but nope… nothing. The top zippered compartment is useless as well as the zippers go the wrong way. Unless you have the pack completely stuffed to the gills, everything falls out when you unzip the thing.

Poor design, but wears comfortably. Not something I’d recommend, to be quite honest.

Yeah… that pack isn’t tops on my list. Newport is a better sandal than a backpack.
