Springtime weather can be unpredictable and it’s always smart to carry around an extra lightweight shell just in case. Or, on early-morning trail runs or bike rides, it’s downright chilly–making a lightweight and breathable shell mandatory.
Outdoor Research has been stepping up their outerwear line over the past few years and the all-new Mens Avido Jacket is a great example of a functional and versatile, lightweight shell. Perfect for cool springtime or autumn weather or unpredictable summer days while scaling windswept ridgelines, the Avido Jacket provides just the right amount of stretch and ventilation to keep you comfortable under all conditions. Style looks to be clean and simple with two front handwarmer pockets and a rear pocket to stash extra goodies.
Nothing fancy… just the basics, but the basics done right. The Outdoor Research Avido wind jacket is a solid piece of outdoor gear for mountain bikers, trail runners, peak baggers or city chillers.
Features of the Outdoor Research Avido Jacket:
- Weight: 8.3 oz
- Material: Breathable stretch ripstop
- Coating: DWR to keep you dry
- Vents: Mesh vents under arms and behind shoulders
- MSRP: $79.00
The new Avido Jacket looks like a great companion stuffed into your hydration pack just in case, or on early-morning runs. This windblocking friend will prove itself the next time you’re doing summertime peakbagging or springtime trail running.

one tiny thing that has always annoyed me on many different wind jackets that I’ve had of this nature is the placement of the zipper when the collar is fully zipped up. Now, I have an Ichabod Crane adam’s apple so perhaps I get more irritation from a zipper placed right in the center of the middle of your neck…but some are better than others. Did you notice any annoyance with zipper placement on the collar?
I wish more jackets would have a side-zip collar.

I am not sure where to connect with the product line that I am trying to locate. It is a”V” necked sweatshirt made for Astoria, Oregon Golf and Country Club. It is ribbed neck and one of the most wonderful products I have ever owned for comfort, durability and so forth. The label is “GEAR” For Sports. It is 65% poly and 35% cotton and made in Korea. the RN 49314a followed by S14927 is on the label. WHERE CAN I OBTAIN MORE OF THIS ITEM? Thanks R. Carson

Hi Rich –
I know exactly the company you are referring to. While they are not affiliated with GEAR.com in any way, I know they do custom decorated logo apparel for ski resort gift shops, golf pro shops, etc. They are indeed called “Gear for Sports” and are located in Kansas (not to be confused with a similar company from Australia called “Gear for Life”). Their website is gearforsports.com.
You can check out a PDF of their fall 2008 golf catalog here: http://www.gearforsports.com/pdf/gear_golf_F08_fullcatalog.pdf
I couldn’t find the exact item you are referencing (they may have discontinued it). There is a V-neck on p. 16 of the catalog above, but it appears to be a 100% polyester windshirt — not a 65/35 blend sweatshirt.
Hope this is helpful! It’s always great to see a fellow Pacific Northwesterner show up on GEAR.com! Most of us who founded GEAR.com are from the Seattle/Portland area and have now migrated to the Rocky Mountains.
I hope you’ll come back to GEAR.com often — your comments are very welcome, and if you ever want to write a post on the site about any golf gear that you use, feel free. Just log in and go to the “Write a post” area to write a couple paragraphs about an item & upload some pics of the gear.
Best regards,
Brig

For those of you interested in items from Gear For Sports, Rich emailed me the following message about their products which he also communicated to the Gear For Sports company so they could use it in promotional material:
“I can not underestimate my statement that this sweatshirt was among the best pieces of wearing attire that I have owned in my long life. The fabric is very durable, easy to care for and most comfortable. You may put that statement in any of your promo pieces. Rich Carson, Beaverton, Oregon (walking distance to Nike headquarters).”
