Product Descriptions
REI Description: The Arc'teryx Beta AR jacket provides the backcountry minimalist durable storm protection in a lightweight and packable jacket. Hip-length Gore-Tex(R) Pro Shell jacket reduces layering overlap and bulkiness; the reinforced shoulders and elbows survive alpine abuse. Gore-Tex Pro Shell 3-layer laminate fabric is tough, extremely breathable and durably waterproof and windproof. Reduced seam quantity and thickness saves weight and offers excellent abrasion- and snag-resistance. Gore Micro Grid backer is a thin, low-denier, low-density woven fabric that allows the shell to slide easily over mid layers. Helmet-compatible Drop Hood(TM) offers fast access to storm protection; it lies below the high collar when not in use and can be cinched in to seal the collar. Hood's cord locks are concealed underneath a waterproof flap to maintain a clean finish and protect them from potential snow and ice buildup; they adjust easily with 1 hand. WaterTight(TM) front and pocket zippers reduce flap bulkiness; Molded Zipper Garages(TM) ensure a leak-free seal. Features a full-length front zipper backed by a laminated interior windflap; laminated chin guard protects sensitive skin. Pit zippers allow easy and efficient ventilation; WaterTight zippers do away with bulky zipper flaps. Features a laminated hem drawcord and micro die-cut cuffs with rip-and-stick closures. Hand pockets are vertically oriented in a traditional "chicken-wing" position for everyday comfort and are accessible while wearing a harness or backpack. Internal chest pocket features a durable, low-bulk laminated zipper. No-lift gusseted underarms allow jacket to stay in place when arms are raised, and ensure unhindered movement; articulated elbows ensure a non-binding fit. The Arc-teryx Beta AR jacket features a dropped rear hem exceptional coverage. Athletic, close-fitting cut aids warmth without inhibiting movement.

Backcountry Description: Arc'teryx designed the Beta AR Jacket as a backcountry workhorse for alpinists who like to take a beating from the elements without sacrificing performance. This jacket features Gore-Tex three-layer construction and fully taped seams to slough rainfall while you huck yourself up the face of a 14ner. Reinforced hard-wear areas mean your Beta will handle pack straps and ice encounters season after season.

My go to Jacket

This is by far the most versatile 3-layer Gore Tex Pro Shell Jacket i have ever used. This jacket sits right in the middle of the current jacket lineup Arc'Teryx offers. I will go over some key features I really like; The fit:Im a 5'11 man and weigh about 165 lbs. This jacket fits nicely and still has ample room for layering underneath. I can use it as a everyday bomb proof rain jacket or as a serious skiing shell. It is a torso length fit which i like since i want the upper part of my bottom covered but not the entire thing. The hood does take some finagling, but once you fit it correctly it fits like a glove to my head. The Build:The use of 3-Layer pro Shell was a no brainer, giving it an ideal weight and amazing waterproofness. The pockets are plenty big for my hands and i can store my phone and wallet with ease in each respective pocket. The small laminated packet inside which is adorned with the Beta greek symbol and 'AR' i found most useful for carrying very important information or things. Best of all, it works great with ski passes that work through a sensor system, it can scan right through the jacket and is at scanner level. I personally like how the chin cuff of the jacket is separated from the hood, thus allowing chin protection with the hood down. Also the pit zips make it easy to let off some heat without sacrificing waterproofness in an intense summer storm. I have a 2011 model and sadly, it is made in china, like most other of Arc'Teryx's sub $500 jackets.Main uses:Personally, this is my idea of the ideal bomb-proof rain jacket, that can also have some fun on the slope in the icy east or the powdery west. Spending half my year in the harsh rain and snow of new england and the other half of the rich snow of Durango, CO, this is my go to 4 season jacket. I will wear anything from nothng but a t-shirt underneath in the summer to the Atom SV underneath in the winter. Overall 2 thumbs up to Arc'Teryx for this one, this jacket can be used in almost every situation and is comfortable and looks damn good as well.
