Risk of hyoid damage?
![]()
Has anyone suffered damage to the hyoid bone, bruised esophagus or strangulation using this barely-adjustable strap system? Be warned - there is no fore-aft adjustment for where the chin strap connects to the side-to-rear Y-strap. It's hard-wired. On my neck, it hangs behind the crook of the neck. The tighter the chin-strap is pulled, the more it digs into the esophagus.Don't get me wrong -- it's a lovely helmet. The large fits my head about perfectly, but the chin strap will not fly. Instructions insist the strap is not to be worn on the point of the chin and include a picture showing the strap nestled into the crook of the neck, but the only adjustment that would allow any fit in where the under-chin strap wears is a dubious snap that allows one of three 1/4-apart positions where the front leg of the Y-strap fastens to the side of the helmet.Helmets are supposed to save lives -- not pose choking or strangulation hazards. It's a bizarre notion that one size strap will fit all neck and head shapes. And it's a disservice from Giro to sell this product through online marketers but not offer those merchants detailed images of the one-size-fits-some strap system. Giro fail!
Vintage look, light weight, great fit.

Got the helmet in the mail today, I'm 7 1/8 hat size or 22 3/4 inches approximate. I got the medium size which is true to size. This helmet reminds me of a older style giro helmet, might have been called the hammer head? this helmet doesn't appear bulky and has adjustable fit with removable inserts. I appreciate the rear elastic support most helping keep the helmet on even when in a accident. I am also pleased to write I was able to adjust the fit in just a few minuets and with a decent semi snug fit. but not resticting. After a long ride any annoyance will become greater. Visor is removable. the color is just as picture, matte gray, with rear reflectors looking nice, not cheesy. if you prefer a not so bulky vintage looking, light weight good looking helmet. This might be the one for you.
