Current Fav. Shell |
I've owned about 10 technical/semi-technical shells and this one is my favorite so far. I love the OR fit. It's not huge in the arms like Cloudveil and MH, not huge in the torso like TNF, doesn't have an oversized hood like MH, and isn't too short like Cloudveil. I'm 5'10 160 lbs, have a small and it fits really well. The Torso is fitted, with enough room for a fleece or a synthetic fill jacket. With down it's a little tight. The hood fits great and it sized to fit a helmet for climbing. The front is big enough to cover your chin and the arms are tight enough to feel warm but big enough to facilitate movement. The cuffs are perfect and i believe are angled so the bottoms cover a little more. All external zippers are waterproof (rubber coated). Breathability seems great and the pit zips are nice(also rubber coated). The pit zips also go all the way to the waist in case you want to zip up from the bottom to have your jacket poncho over your packs belt. Kinda wierd but I see that application. Over a grea jacket. Great sturdy feel. It feels like a mix between a hard and a softshell. Highly recommend. Will fit best of you have an athletic fit.

Excellent in it's class; attention on the sizing |
Among jackets with Gore-tex pro fabric, this is a standout. I shudder to pay over 400 bucks for a jacket, and probably never will (I can pay for a cool trip for that price), but when I found this jacket on sale I was delighted. It is very lightweight, which means it is easy to pack, but the shell itself is tough, waterproof, and breathable. Breathability is greatly enhanced by the zippers that run from the arm pits all the way to the bottom hem of the jacket. The pockets are sufficient; the hood is adequate, and folds up inside the collar. I only have one suggestion for an improvement: I wish it had a removable powder skirt.A word on sizing: some reviews on this site caused me to order an inappropriate size. I am 6'1, 175 lb., wide shoulders, slender build (not thick-chested; no gut). Some reviews suggested that the jacket was cut very large, I therefore ordered a Medium (I usually wear a Large). Medium wasn't even close! - not even if I had no layers underneath at all. With a Medium, the arm holes were too tight, the jacket would bind when I reached across my chest or up over my head, and there was no room whatsoever for a fleece jacket or other layers underneath.Long story short: a Large would've sufficed, but an XL suited me even better, largely because I will always layer under the jacket for skiing, mountaineering, or cold rainy conditions. My intention is not to slam other reviewers who were trying to be helpful. But I want to provide a different perspective, and I advise caution before ordering.
