I grew up dreaming of REI. As a Seattle-native, REI was a staple and it was where I would spend my free time… browsing up and down the aisles looking at backpacks, tents, sleeping bags and, of course, flexing skis. We were content just dreaming about new gear instead of wandering around the mall with the rest of the teenagers.
Now that I’m a little older, I can appreciate REI not only for their amazing selection, awesome return policy and myriad of locations, but also appreciate the way the company is run. You see, REI is a Co-Op. What does that mean? Well, it’s actually owned and managed by its members–you and me (well, if you’re a member). A lifetime membership is a paltry $20 and gives you an annual dividend (typically 10%) and access to the annual 20% off one item sale.
This year is the first year that REI’s house-brand Novara bikes are included in the 20% off sale, so I took advantage of that and bought my 4-yr-old a Novara Firefly 16″ girls bike and saved almost $32! With ship-to-store, I didn’t have to pay a dime for shipping and it arrived in less than a week.
She’s stoked and I’m stoked to get such a great deal on a quality bike for my daughter that can be passed down to her two sisters as they grow older.
