The Scarpa Epic shoe will amaze you with the comfort and versatile style. I’ve been using this shoe for the last couple of weeks and have dubbed it my official all around shoe.
Scarpa Epic: Hiker or Trail Runner?
The Epic is a hybrid no doubt. The rubberized toe makes it a stellar approach climbing shoe. The rigid tread and low profile makes it the ultimate hiker. I wouldn’t call this shoe a trail runner, bit too heavy. The Epic also makes a great urban coffee-run shoe.
I stopped using hiking boots for backpacking a long time ago. Wearing a TNF trail runner on one of my trips was like breaking into a whole new revolution of ditching old man camping ways.

Scarpa Epic Fit
When I think of Scarpa I think narrow. I was nervous on using this shoe when I first tried it on because it was a bit snug. The Epic looked too good to pass up so I kept on wearing them. After 3 days the tightness went away and it felt like a custom fit.
I talked to the rep about this and he found the same results. The webbing around the foot can fit multiple sizes of feet. I’m very impressed because it’s frustrating finding a great shoe but only narrow or wide feet can fit inside. And a custom feel ain’t bad either.
Using the Scarpa Epic
I was on really wet and muddy terrain a couple weeks ago. I was nervous how water resistant this shoe is. My La Sportiva Nepals are great for wet conditions (an overkill no doubt) and I actually enjoy hiking in them. Sure enough my foot dipped into a stream. My foot got wet but after about 20 min. it was pretty much dry. I look forward to testing this concept more.
Trimming down on footwear is always a good thing. The sticky rubber made a huge difference on wet rocks, I virtually had no slippage. For a low profile hiker the support was perfect. I also believe you need to build up strength in your legs and have experience with carrying a 35-40lb pack before using low profile hikers. I don’t mean you need to use boots for a year, but beginners need to take it easy and watch where they step.
The Scarpa Epic is epic. It is the most comfortable all around shoe I’ve ever been in. Compared to the Keen Targhee the Epic is lighter and more responsive. When you forget about what shoes you’re wearing on the hike you have a good shoe, and that is the Scarpa Epic.
