REI 20% Members Discount – Only 10 Days Left

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

I grew up dreaming of REI. As a Seattle-native, REI was a staple and it was where I would spend my free time… browsing up and down the aisles looking at backpacks, tents, sleeping bags and, of course, flexing skis. We were content just dreaming about new gear instead of wandering around the mall with the rest of the teenagers.

Now that I’m a little older, I can appreciate REI not only for their amazing selection, awesome return policy and myriad of locations, but also appreciate the way the company is run. You see, REI is a Co-Op. What does that mean? Well, it’s actually owned and managed by its members–you and me (well, if you’re a member). A lifetime membership is a paltry $20 and gives you an annual dividend (typically 10%) and access to the annual 20% off one item sale.

This year is the first year that REI’s house-brand Novara bikes are included in the 20% off sale, so I took advantage of that and bought my 4-yr-old a Novara Firefly 16″ girls bike and saved almost $32! With ship-to-store, I didn’t have to pay a dime for shipping and it arrived in less than a week.

She’s stoked and I’m stoked to get such a great deal on a quality bike for my daughter that can be passed down to her two sisters as they grow older.

So, what are you buying with your 20% REI member discount?

REI Vacuum Infuser Mug

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

I don’t normally drink coffee. However, as of late, between grad school, 2 part time jobs and all my time outside, 2 cups before breakfast has become the standard. As usual, I need something indestructible that I can carry from the backcounty to class, and the REI Vacuum Infuser Mug has become my favorite coffee mug.

I frequently drop things, spill and am a general klutz. This coffee mug is perfect for me! Despite multitudes of drops down stairs and trail alike, being tossed into the back of my truck, it always stays closed and I have yet to have a coffee spill disaster! I love it.

REI Vacuum Infuser Mug

  • Maintains temperature like no other thermos! I can pour a cup of coffee in at 6am, go out for a quick tour, head to class for a few hours, and then break into the coffee, and its still as warm as it was at 6am.
  • Detachable infuser plate allows you to brew tea in the mug! Toss your tea leaves in the bottom, add hot water and enjoy! Doesn’t work as well for coffee, however. The mesh of the screen isn’t quite fine enough, and you end up drinking grounds…
  • Indestructible. The mug has fallen out of my bag on climbs, rolled around the back of my truck and survived my first semester of graduate school with me, and I’ve never seen it leak!

Check it out! REI Vacuum Infuser Mug Launches New Web Site… finally!

Thursday, May 29th, 2008 has been one of the most stagnant online presences in the outdoor industry. I’m all for sticking with what works, but was stuck in ugly land for a long time. I’ve wondered for years why it hasn’t been updated. Honestly, I can’t remember when it was updated last, but it’s been over 5 years, which is an eternity in the online world.

Well, say old and crusty no more because has entered the modern eCommerce age with a clean and easy-to-use shopping site. I’m not sure if they can keep up with the rampant pace that keeps to ensure their Web site is clean, fresh and optimized, but I like the changes I’ve seen and we can all hope that they only continue to improve things. REI Travel Wallet and Travel Document Organizer – Gear Review

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Whenever I travel outside of the borders of the good ol’ US of A, I can’t help but notice that most wallets are inadequate to carry all the things you need. That velcro VANS wallet that you usually carry? Won’t carry a Passport very well, will it? How about saving receipts and carrying boarding passes all in one location? Nope. That’s where the REI Travel Wallet and Travel Document Organizer becomes a real cherished piece of gear.

The REI Travel Wallet is about the dimensions of a paperback book, but much thinner. While that won’t fit into your pocket, it is slim enough to slide into your bags quite easily. (more…)
